When used correctly, road salt can be a helpful safety precaution, but excessive use has dangerous consequences for our waters. Chloride, the key ingredient in deicing road salts, is a growing pollutant of concern in the Milwaukee River Basin. One teaspoon of salt is all it takes to pollute five gallons of water permanently. Join Milwaukee Riverkeeper staff to discuss the impacts of road salt and learn about local efforts to monitor our waterways. We’ll share steps you can take to save money and protect our waters.
